No. 2 UW-Oshkosh topped No. 3 North Central (Ill.) for its second road win in a row over a ranked foe while Union's Concannon blasted No. 25 St. John Fisher. On the women's side Illinois Wesleyan tripped No. 18 Chicago and Southern Virginia got a big game from someone other than All-American Katie Garrish.
The Titans opened the game by making 10 of their first 13 shots, including 5-for-5 from three, and never trailed in a 76-66 victory at North Central. Eric Peterson set new career highs with 18 points, 12 rebounds and five assists for Oshkosh (2-0). The Cardinals (0-1) pulled within six on Will Clausel's layup with 6:37 to play but Adam Fravert and Jack Flynn answered with back-to-back baskets to push the Titans' lead back to double digits.
UW-Oshkosh concludes its three-game road trip through the CCIW with a game at Carthage next Tuesday night.
Berry hung with No. 6 Emory for a while before the Eagles pulled away for a 99-85 victory in Mount Berry, Ga. The Eagles (2-0) only used seven players and six of them scored double figures, led by Romin Williams who had 27. No. 21 Wooster won its season opener 110-100 over visiting Medaille thanks to 25-point nights from Dontae Williams and Danyon Hempy.
Mike Concannon shot 7-for-14 with four 3-pointers and Union knocked off No. 25 St. John Fisher, 89-71. The Dutchmen (2-0) had a 37-9 advantage in bench points as Nate Freeman and Andrew Laub scored 12 points apiece.
Outside the Top 25, Muhlenberg used a hot night from behind the arc to defeat MAC Freedom favorite DeSales 92-79. The Mules (2-0) shot 14-for-26 from three and all five Muhlenberg starters scored double figures. Springfield erased a 23-point first half deficit and defeated Keene State 106-101 in overtime. All-American Jake Ross posted another monster game with 41 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists for the Pride (2-0).
Eastern won the Battle of Eagle Road over Cabrini, 67-57, while Messiah spoiled Aaron Kelly's coaching debut at Catholic in a 78-75 overtime victory over the Cardinals. Colin Sareyka tallied 32 points, six assists and five rebounds for the Falcons (1-0).
On the women's side, Illinois Wesleyan rode Kendall Sosa's big night to an 89-82 victory at No. 18 Chicago. Sosa poured in 35 points on 13-for-17 shooting, including 5-for-8 from three. She played 37 minutes while Riley Brovelli and Sydney Shanks played 38 apiece for the Titans (2-0).
Kylee Rosbrook scored 25 points to lead Brockport over Rochester Tech 65-64 in the Golden Eagles' season opener. Sabrina Wolfe gave the Tigers (0-2) a two-point lead with 14 seconds left, only to see Brockport's Bailey Pratt drain a three with seven seconds left. Rochester Tech came up empty on its final possession and Brockport had its first victory over the Tigers in more than a decade.
Southern Virginia opened the season with a 96-82 victory over Bridgewater (Va.), as Savanna Christensen scored 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the Knights. All-American Katie Garrish chipped in 14 points, 13 boards, six assists and four blocks. UW-Whitewater converted 24 Calvin turnovers into 18 points and a 66-54 victory in the Warhawks' opener.
