After coaching the Waynesburg men for seven seasons, Mark Christner is returning to his alma mater to become Calvin College's new head women's basketball coach.

Calvin Director of Athletics Dr. Jim Timmer, Jr. made the announcement via release on Wednesday.
"[Christner] is well-versed in the mission of our institution and he has a deep love for Calvin College," said Timmer in the release. "He also has a strong understanding of what it takes to produce a successful basketball program, both on and off the court. I am confident that Mark will do a tremendous job as our head women's basketball coach and our athletic department is looking forward to having him rejoin our family."
Christner spent the last seven seasons as the head men's basketball coach at Waynesburg College where he went 78-109 with the Comets. Waynesburg finished 9-17 last season.
Prior to that Christner worked with the men's and women's basketball teams at Calvin. He was an assistant men's coach under Kevin Vande Steek for eight seasons (2002-2010) and an assistant women's coach from 1999 to 2002. He graduated from Calvin in 1999 and his wife Sara (Plasman) Christner played basketball and softball at Calvin.
Christner replaces Chuck Winkelman who resigned from the position during the 2018-19 season. Austin Randel served as interim head coach and the Knights finished the season 12-14, 7-9 in the MIAA, which was the program's lowest win total in more than a decade.
