Southern Virginia named Adam Wardenburg as its new head women's basketball coach. He replaces Heather Mills who returned to Oregon where she will be a high school boys' basketball head coach.
Vice President and Director of Athletics Jason Lamb announced the hire in a University press release.
"[Adam's] basketball resume and network are strong and he has the ability to find and attract the best student-athletes for who we are. Adam comes from a basketball family and his experience at different levels make him a perfect fit for our program."
Wardenburg spent the last four seasons as an assistant women's basketball coach at Division I Utah Valley University where he worked as the team's recruiting coordinator. He previously worked as the Director of Basketball Operations for the women's team at his alma mater Division I Utah State University.
Wardenburg's connections to Utah will help him build the women's program at Southern Virginia University where the majority of the students are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
"My family and I are excited for this great opportunity at Southern Virginia," Wardenburg said in the release. "Southern Virginia gives athletes opportunities to live a good, balanced life and have a great education."
Wardenburg replaces Heather Mills who went 30-70 in four years at Southern Virginia. The Knights just finished their fourth season and most successful season as a member of NCAA Division III. Southern Virginia went 12-13 and had the Mid-Atlantic Region Rookie of the Year Katie Garrish.
Mills returned to her home state of Oregon to become the head boys basketball coach at Yamhill Carlton High School. According to a Portland media outlet, she is the first woman to lead an Oregon High School boys program since the 1930s.
