SUNY Oneonta announced that long-time Plattsburgh State assistant Cameron Conover has been named the Red Dragons' new head men's basketball coach. He replaces Vince Medici who left the school after 12 seaons to become the new athletic director at Hudson Falls (N.Y.) High School.
SUNY Oneonta Director of Athletics Tracey Ranieri announced the move.
"We are excited to have Coach Conover join our team," said Ranieri in a release. "His wealth of experience and success combined with a strong and talented nucleus of returning players is sure to keep fans in their seats. It is going to be a great year."
Conover spent the prior 11 seasons on Tom Curle's coaching staff at SUNYAC rival Plattsburgh State. He coordinated recruiting for the Cardinals over a stretch in which they won four conference titles, reached seven NCAA tournaments and had three conference players of the year.
"I am very familiar with the school, and all that Oneonta offers," Conover said in a release. "There are so many great things about Oneonta - great location, outstanding education, exceptional facilities, and great people. I am confident we will be successful and that our current players and future recruits will love it here and have a positive and rewarding experience."
Before moving to Upstate New York, Conover spent one season as an assistant at California Community College Cosumnes River College in Sacramento. He played one season at Champlain College, a junior college in Burlington, Vt., and then transferred to Division II South Carolina-Aiken where he earned his bachelor's degree in communication.
Conover replaces Vince Medici who resigned his position earlier this month to become the athletic director at Hudson Falls (N.Y.) High School. Medici coached the Red Dragons to a 137-174 record over 12 seasons, including a trip to the NCAA tournament in 2010.
SUNY Oneonta finished 14-11, 9-9 in the SUNYAC last season.
