Newbury men's basketball coach Jelani Townsell has resigned after five seasons at the helm of the program, it was announced Monday afternoon. The Nighthawks were just 2-23 this past season and enter the offseason on a 19-game losing streak.

Townsell's inherited team went 12-15 in 2011-12 and the Nighthawks posted a winning record the following season at 14-12. However, Newbury fell to 3-22, 4-21 and 2-23 over the next three seasons.

"I wish Jelani the best of luck in his future endeavors," says athletic director Jonathan Harper. "He conducted himself with class and dignity as the men's basketball coach. He was also instrumental in rebuilding the cross country program. Everyone that has had the opportunity to work with him came away impressed with his professionalism. He will be missed."

A search for Townsell's replacement has commenced.
