The Plattsburgh Cardinals knocked off No. 7 Bowdoin while the Catholic Cardinals picked up their second loss of the season, this time falling to Trinity (Texas).
Plattsburgh upset the Polar Bears 67-60 in the final game of its Hampton Inn/Microtel Cardinal Classic. Bowdoin held Plattsburgh to three points in the second quarter, but took just a one point lead into the half.
The Cardinals (3-0) recovered and shot 18-for-21 from the free throw line in the second half. Plattsburgh got 44 points from seniors Allie Taylor, Stephanie Linder and Devona Paul and another 13 from graduate stuent Misha Green. Marle Curle, whose father Tom is Plattsburgh's men's coach, scored 16 for Bowdoin (1-1).
Trinity (Texas) continued its strong start by beating No. 16 Catholic 66-51 at Johns Hopkins' weekend tournament. Mollie Hughes scored 18 points for the Tigers (4-0) who shot 41 percent from three. The Cardinals (1-2) shot 28 percent from the field (16-for-57). The Cardinals of North Central (Ill.) fell just short in their upset bid against No. 13 Maryville. The Scots edged North Central, 87-85.
Wisconsin Lutheran often schedules a highly ranked non-conference opponent to test itself before it rolls through its NACC opponents. This year that scheduling strategy paid off in an 86-80 win over No. 10 Calvin. Caitlin Knueppel scored 25 points for Wisconsin Luthernan, including three 3-pointers down the stretch. Wisconsin Lutheran (2-1) outscored the Knights (3-1) by 26 in the paint and shot 54 percent from the field.
No. 5 NYU avoided a major upset by holding off MIT 73-70 in the first game of its weekend tournament. Megan Dawe scored 28 points for the Violets (2-0) who took outscored the Engineers 27-6 from the free throw line.
The University of Rochester's Palestra is always a tough place for visiting teams, as No. 16 Ohio Northern learned Saturday evening. The Yellowjackets knocked off the Polar Bears 75-62 to cap an impressive weekend in which they defeated two NCAA tournament teams from last season. Lauren Deming hit a three pointer to start the game for Rochester which led start to finish. Deming finished with 18 points.
No. 3 Tufts started the season in fine fashion by beating Brandeis, 69-52. Preseason All-American Michela North had 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Jumbos. No. 2 Amherst had no problem in its opener against Albertus Magnus. The Lord Jeffs outscored the Falcons 31-5 in the first quarter en route to 97-39 blowout.
Last season the University of New England had a puzzling non-conference loss to Bates, which finished 1-9 in the NESCAC. No need to puzzle this year -- the 17th ranked Nor'easters blasted the Bobcats 101-46. Next up are two more NESCAC foes in Bowdoin and Tufts over the next 10 days.
Outside the Top 25, Westminster (Mo.) won a double-overtime thriller over Elmhurst, 108-107. The Bluejays' starters scored 98 points, led by Andrea Zallis. She scored 30 points in 47 minutes, including the go-ahead free throws with 12 seconds left in the second extra period.
