Defending champions UW-Whitewater got its first win of the season in a place where road wins are rare.
The top-ranked Warhawks travelled to Holland, Michigan to play Hope in the Flying Dutch's season opener. Hope entered the season with a 123-15 all-time record at DeVos Fieldhouse.
UW-Whitewater trailed Hope for much of the second half until Drew Bryson made two three-pointers as part of an 8-0 run that gave the Warhawks an 80-74 lead with less than a minute left. Alex Edison scored six points in the final 23 seconds for Hope but two free throws by KJ Evans preserved the victory, 82-80.
Hope gets another shot at a ranked WIAC opponent when UW-Stevens Point visits DeVos Fieldhouse on Saturday.
Meanwhile Christopher Newport edged Randolph-Macon in an overtime thriller in Virginia. Randolph-Macon's Chris Hamilton sunk a three-pointer with seven seconds left to send the game to overtime. But Christopher Newport held the Yellow Jackets without a field goal in extra time and captured a 71-70 victory.
Defiance outscored Wheaton (Ill.) 34-18 in the paint and knocked off the 18th-ranked Thunder, 87-85. Bernard Edwards had 22 points for the Yellow Jackets who improved to 2-0.
Oneonta State sent Williams to an 0-2 start by beating the Ephs, 74-68. Zach Mager had 22 points and 11 rebounds for the Red Dragons. The Ephs have lost their first two home games to start this season after losing just three games at Chandler Gym in the last two seasons.
Hobart will open the Division III football postseason against Ithaca on Saturday. On Tuesday the Statesmen opened the Division III basketball regular season with an 84-66 win over the Bombers.
On the women's side, Amherst opened its season with an 84-67 win at Keene State. Amherst All-American Megan Robertson, who missed the second half of last season due to an injury, did not play. Marley Giddens had 20 points and eight rebounds for the Lord Jeffs. Tufts used a 27-0 run to pound Hartwick, 70-32.
Western New England trailed crosstown rival Springfield College 51-29 with 15 minutes remaining. The Golden Bears put together a 23-2 run to pull within a point and then continued the surge in a 68-63 victory.
Case Western Reserve held No. 16 Baldwin Wallace to 34 percent shooting (21-for-61) and had four starters score double figures, as the Spartans upended the Yellow Jackets 61-54.
