A year ago, high school senior Lauren Hill found out she was terminally ill, battling a brain cancer called Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma. Since then, it has been wrapping itself around her brain, gradually robbing her of her basketball skills, and eventually it will take her life as well.
But she was bound and determined to keep pushing forward, to fulfill her goal of playing college basketball. Today, she will do so for Mount St. Joseph vs. Hiram, in a game that the NCAA permitted to be played two weeks before the official Division III start date, and on a stage that has brought national attention to Hill and DIPG.
At 2:10 p.m. today, the Lions will take the floor at Xavier University, a site chosen when demand for this game far overwhelmed the MSJ campus. It will be aired on Fox Sports Ohio and streamed online for a national audience.
"I never gave up for a second, even when they told me I have a terminal diagnosis. I never for a second thought about sitting down and not living life anymore," Hill told Cincinnati television station WKRC.
