After a national search, Sewanee has named Tom Campbell as the new women’s basketball coach athletic director Mark Webb announced recently.
Campbell was an assistant women’s basketball coach at Centre. He replaces Dickie McCarthy, who moved into an administrative role last month after 11 seasons, compiling a 96-180 record.
“Coach Campbell brings many years of coaching success to Sewanee,” said Webb. “He is an outstanding teacher of basketball as well as an accomplished recruiter to a highly selective, small liberal arts college. I am confident that our women’s basketball program will thrive under his leadership.”
Campbell will officially arrive at Sewanee July 1.
“I am truly humbled and blessed to have this opportunity to be the head women’s basketball coach at Sewanee,” said Campbell. “I appreciate the faith that the school, the administration, and Mark Webb have shown in me. It is an honor to follow Dickie McCarthy, someone who I have a great deal of respect for.”
Prior to Campbell’s arrival in Danville, Ky., Centre had won only 17 games in three seasons. Since 2007, Campbell has assisted Centre to an overall record of 112-51 under Wendie Austin-Robinson, and a conference mark of 73-23. The Colonels also won the 2012 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship and earned a berth in the Division III NCAA Tournament’s Sweet Sixteen.
Individually, Campbell coached 20 student-athletes who received all-conference honors including the 2012 SCAC Player of the Year. Additionally, a pair of Colonels also received All-American awards.
On the links, Campbell, as head men’s golf coach, led Centre to its first-ever conference championship in 2010. The Colonels went on and finished 13th in the NCAA Tournament, while student-athlete Chris Morris finished third as an individual. A season later Centre finished seventh, while Morris became the first Colonel to win both medalist honors at the SCAC Tournament and Division III championship.
“I am grateful for the last seven years at Centre College and to have been a part of many wonderful things,” said Campbell. “I have grown as a person and a coach, and the experiences there have allowed me to be more than ready for what lies ahead.”
Prior to his time at Centre, Campbell spent 15 years coaching at the collegiate level beginning as a student/graduate assistant for the women's basketball program at Transylvania. He then went to Kentucky Wesleyan College as the associate head women's basketball coach for the next five seasons.
Campbell then moved to the high school level where he experienced a great deal of success. As a head coach, he guided two schools to the regional semifinals. During a four-year stint at Owensboro Catholic, Campbell led the Lady Aces to a regional finals' appearance in 2003. In 2005, Campbell led Owensboro High School to its first 9th District Championship game appearance and to its first regional championship game berth in 11 seasons.
A 1992 graduate of Transylvania, Campbell is also an accomplished amateur golfer. He finished seventh in the Kentucky State Amateur in 2000 and then followed that up with an eighth place finish the following year
