Whitworth's Michael Taylor and Olivet's Michael McClary each scored 18 points to lead West All-Stars past the East All-Stars, 92-81, in the Reese's Division III College All-Star game, played as part of the 2011 NCAA Division III men's basketball championships on Saturday at the Salem Civic Center.
Hamline's Carl Hipp added 14 points and game-high 15 rebounds for the West, while St. Mary's (Md.) Alex Franz handed out 10 assists. The West team was coached by former Muskingum coach Jim Burson with an assist from former Suffolk coach Jim Nelson.
Burson was also called out to the free throw line late in the second half to shoot two "technical" free throws after East assistant coach Mike Turner, the longtime Albion coach, was jokingly called for a technical foul.
Burson hit both shots.
Dave Golembiowski of SUNYIT and Brandon Stephens of Mass-Dartmouth paced the East All-Stars with 14 points apiece and Golembiowski added 12 rebounds. The East team was coached by former Allegheny coach Phil Ness.
