St. Vincent and Whitworth won thrillers on Day 3 of the D3hoops.com Classic, while the George Fox and DeSales women finished their trip to Vegas with a 2-0 mark and Carthage's early-season skid continued.
The No. 2 Pirates survived a buzzer-beater attempt by Cam Denney of Calvin to down the Knights in the last game of the night, 68-65. Kenny Love came out on fire for the Pirates, scoring the first 11 points, finishing with a game-high 28. Jordan Daley led Calvin with 14.
JC Howard hit a jumper for St. Vincent to break a 71-all tie with 1.3 seconds left, then the Bearcats held on as Ramapo launched a shot that missed just to the right from three-quarters court and St. Vincent won a back-and-forth battle, 73-71.
Howard finished with a game-high 19 in a game that featured 10 lead changes.
David Haye gave Ramapo its largest lead of the game, 69-66, with a three-point play with 2:10 to go, but Ramapo missed its last six shots, including a dunk in the final minute.
Pacific Lutheran finished its stint at the D3hoops.com Classic with a 2-0 mark, as Dylan Foreman scored 18 and Brandon Lester and Jared Christy added 13 points apiece in a 73-57 win vs. UW-Stout. The teams combined to use 37 players in the game.
George Fox won in a Bruin-like manner, working the full-court pressure to near perfection for three quarters against Bethel, then lighting it up from 3-point range in the final quarter to win 84-71. Justin Benner led the Bruins (11-0) with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Anjenae Torregano came off the bench to add 18 in the win.
Carthage's losing streak extended to seven games in a bizarre game with two key occurrences that helped lead to a 67-60 overtime win by St. Vincent. In the third quarter, the official scorebook erroneously gave an extra point to St. Vincent that was never challenged by Carthage. And in overtime, Carthage pounced on a loose ball trailing 63-60 with 26.4 seconds left and called a timeout it didn't have. The resulting free throws and possession allowed the Bearcats to ice the game.
DeSales finished a 2-0 trip to Las Vegas as Morgan McCollian racked up 25 points and 13 rebounds in a 69-50 win vs. La Verne. DeSales used its height advantage to bring in 20 offensive rebounds, leading to 27 second-chance points in the win.
